In South America, in which countries is it safe for Americans to drink the tap water? Or is it unsafe in all of them?

Your question is odd.
You ask where it's safe FOR AMERICANS to drink tap water in South America. Is there anything wrong with Americans?I'm asking because in my country (Argentina) we drink tap water and so do tourists from anywhere, and no one has gotten sick so far. So I guess our water is not nationality-biased.

You can drink tap water safely here; fresh, clear and crystalline tap water. I thought everyone knew that tap water IS drinking water. It's different if you want to drink from a well, for example. But today those are rare even in the countryside.

The first guy who answered seems to have taken his *information* from some online guide. I wouldn't trust those. Who knows where that info comes from? Better talk to a person who lives in the country you want to visit.

If a hotel has drinking water, so will the house next to it, and the one across the street. Boy! doesn't anyone have a brain or even common sense around here?

If, however, you have health problems, you should probably not leave the safety of your home because the third world is very dangerous for people with little or no education or knowledge of the world. You know, not even the witch-doctor in our most civilized tribe might be able to save you if you made the huge mistake of drinking our water!

Stay home and be happy.

Cheers.
