Why Navajo Sand Painting important?
Screamingradical above is actually closer to the truth. sand paintings are Navajo Navajo spiritual and healing ceremonies and were not intended as either works of art to be used for decoration and display they are used to record the history of the tribe as other posters above have implied (they can be confused with petroglyphs and Other cave paintings). Generally, a Medicine Man would use handfuls of colored sand to draw symbols or pictures of poweful Some gods and spirits on the floor of the person they tried to heal. After the picture is complete, various ceremeonies are made on it (including Sometimes watering or corn pollen on the image), then sand the image is taken and smeared on the person being healed. The idea is to capture the magic of powerful symbols or spirits and apply them to healing. Once the ceremony is completed, the sand painting is completely destroyed to free minds. In relatively recent times, non-Navajo art collectors have taken an interest in sand paintings. As a result, you can buy sand paintings that have been permanently laminated to a board or other surface display. However, for these men of medicine who creates always include a certain amount of deliberate errors and defects in design so as not to invoke the spirits and capturing real and symbols used in ceremonies. Therefore, while they demostrated the skill required to create a sand painting, they are not true sand painting in the traditional sense (art dealers are not something Real quick to point out). Let me be clear - sand paintings need a great artistic skills to create. The drawings are often Very Large and very detailed and complex - not many people could draw with a pencil and paper, let alone by sprinkling colored sand by hand. I am simply saying that the sand painting itself is not designed as a work of art for public display (such as Oil Painting or sculpture) and the images themselves do not represent scenes of Navajo life. They are part of a spiritual ritual similar to a Christian priest make a baptism or other ritual.
