Would exercise increase one's chance to get cancer? (See inside for reasoning)?
From my understanding, the reason (or one of the reasons) cancer develops is from some sort of screwup when new cells are produced, that the new cells don't know what they're doing, overpopulate, and so on.
I'd sometimes pick away at dry, chapped peeling lips 'cause they'd aggrevate me. My dentist told me that's bad because the constant cell reproduction could heighten one's chance for cancer.
People who have been using tanning salons have been found to generate a higher chance for skin cancer. "Tanning" is the damaging of skin cells, them rebuilding themselves anew with more melanin, that would in turn help to prevent future damage.
Follow these trains of thought, wouldn't building muscle, which is the damaging and reconstruction of muscle tissue, also increase your chance for cancer, as opposed to someone who didn't?
Building muscle does involve causing some temporary damage to muscle tissue so that it grows stronger as it grows back. However, the difference with building muscle is that the damage is mostly at the tissue and cellular level, whereas sun damage and damage from tanning beds damages the DNA, which may cause the cells to divide the wrong way and lead to cancerous growth.
DNA is similar to a computer program - they are the set of instructions that tell a cell how to grow and divide properly. When this program becomes damaged by the sun's rays, or chemicals, or oxidative stress, it may not know how to properly divide or metabolize, and may grow out of control, becoming cancerous as a result.
That said, it is theoretically possible that exercise may be a contributing factor to some kinds of cancer, since exercising can cause oxidative stress and free radicals to damage tissues and even DNA to some degree(although not as much as the sun as said before). Please note this isn't very likely, and that most studies suggest exercise lowers the risk of cancer. Over-exercising and not getting enough rest, a bad diet or exercising in a very polluted environment may play play a role in the development of cancer. While exercise may create toxins, it stimulates the body's circulation in such a way that these toxins and toxins coming into the body are more quickly removed from the body. There is also some evidence that hypoxia(low oxygen levels) helps promote cancer growth. Exercise increases oxygen levels.
