What kind of paint can I use on the head of a Japanese drum?
I'm looking for something to extend the life of the playing surface of my taiko, specifically a paint or some kind of latex or rubberized finish that can stay flexible while the crazy drummers in my group beat the heck out of these drums. I use natural rawhide for the drumheads and without any coating, the hide lasts for about 2-3 years of hard playing. Is there something to make it stronger, but still playable?
Based on experience from master Taiko drummers, Shoe Goo is a great coating for your Taiko head. It will slightly alter the sound, but not noticeable, and will 'rubberize' your head for prolonged use.
