Native New Yorker considering a move to Phoenix, Arizona?
I am a 26 year old from Queens, New York and my husband and I are considering moving to the Phoenix area. Does anyone know how Phoenix compares to New York City in terms of ease in finding employment, cost of living, and quality of life in general. Are there any former New Yorkers who have made this move before who can offer some advice?
First the bad news, then the good news. I am a Native New Yorker, who has been living out here, for many years. I live in Tucson AZ about 125 miles south of Phoenix and I commute up to Phoenix quite a bit, have been for years. I want to say please move out here. We need more New Yorkers!!!!! And I want to say don't, unless you don't mind passive,(rather passive/aggressive) narrow minded personality types, outnumbering you 100 to one. Yes, it's "laid back", which translates into non efficient, sloppy, lower quality services in your new community. Please Google, an article from last year, 2007 from the Boston Globe, called...."Back to Ya" Even though it's about a Bostoner moved to California, it's the same, I know, I lived in Los Angeles, Ca, for 11 years, before I came to Arizona! Had I moved to AZ straight from NY, without slowing down to LA pace first, I may have gone nuts!!! CULTURE SHOCK is hard, very hard on most Transplanted NYers, been hearing about it for years, from others out here like us.
The cost of livng is lower, but so is the PAY, !!!!!!!!!!!! The State is unionless, mostly, and the conservitive right wing, retired over 60ish folks from the Mid-west and Bible Belts, have all the power. Believe me. People are passive-quite, don't complain much,... not becasuse they are all nice, but because, they are afraid. The civil rights of others out here is not honored most of the time....and so on. You don' t have civil rights, unless you have money, as warped as that sounds,in the 21 st century, it's true.
The heat, yes most of the time it's a Dry Heat and after 2 or 3 years most bodies do ajust. But it's wicked heat, never the less, 100-110 and dry feels a lot hotter than 95 degrees and humid with a feels like temp of 108 for example..of a Queens summer day!! It's also more dangerous too and at Latitude, the sun is so much more intense, it's like tanning in a microwave. That can be good if you like sunbathing and want it in a hurry and you have olive skin or darker, like many of us, but it's still Hot. Oh yes, then there is the monsoon season, though it's more of it in Tucson and Mexico, than in Phoenix, Phoenix has a monsoon season too. You see the monsoon season is July and August, mostly and the good thing about it is that thanks to it the temps can drop form 112 and dry down to 107 and humid, even though the humidity may only be 80%, it still feels a lot nicer that 112 and dry!!!!! so it is welcome! Oh but the sunsets are the most beautiful in the world!!!!!! even beats Hawaii's sunsets!!!!!!!!!!!!! have your camera ready!
They love to put down NYer's, as in bashing us..most of them have not even been to NY or if they have they went for a week on a vacation, ignorance is rampent out here! There are to many Hicks too.
Arizonans Drive to fast and Tailgate like there is no tomorrow! They are not laid back behing the wheel.
The food stinks, except for the Mexican and the Indian, as well as the strong presence of the Native American and Mexican Cultures out here I think are GREAT! Thank god for them both, and to the beautiful subtropical desert, I just love it and I'd rather be hot than to cold like I was up there in those NY winters! I do not miss either. It's wonderful in the winter, you will love it!
Many NYers who have moved here, say they miss the ocean, but we have the rugged desert mountians, are gorgoeus. There is the beach, it's just 60 miles south of the border, about a 3 hour drive. Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) on Mexican west coast on the Sea of Cortez, blue and warm...so the 3 to maybe 4 hour drive if you go from Phoenix is not to bad, considering I spent as long as 2 to 3 hours in traffic on the Wantagh Parkway quite often, to get to Jones beach from less than 20 miles away....and it beats the LA beaches too, which by the way are to far. And yes the drive is longer, and traffic is not a problem. I do miss NY, go back any time I can afford it. Arizona has it's plus's too. Grimaldis Pizza(from Brooklyn) and they fixed the water issue has 4 or 5 places in Phoenix and 1 in Tucson too now. It often takes the average NYer about a year to fall in love with Mexican food, but once you do your hooked!!!!! If I ever do move back to NY someday, where the quality of Mexican food is still in a sad state, that would be a problem for me, just like missing good Italian is for us out here.
About the heat again..yes it's hot hot hot, but just about every place you fo to live, even if it's an apartment in the barrio, has a pool. Good luck on your move or not, which ever path you decide.
