Mohegan Indian

How much Native American must you be to be considered for a scholarship?

I am Mohegan Indian and Canadian. I'm a few other things mixed in but those are the main ones. I know if you're a certain percentage of Native American you could be eligible for multiple scholarships. How much Native American?

The percentage of ancestry would depend upon your tribe. To find that out you have to contact your tribal headquarters and ask what their blood-quantum standards are. Typically this is not enough. Then, if you meet the requirement, you have to officially enroll in the tribe or at least be able to prove ancestry. This means that you must be able to prove that one of your ancestors was once enrolled in the tribe.

The majority of Native American scholarships require enrollment or proof of decedency. However there are also many scholarships for people of color in general. You would qualify for most of these even without being able to prove your heritage as most are based on self-identification.

I would recommend that you become more involved in your heritage before you try and reap financial rewards from it.
