What can I do to keep a carved pumpkin from rotting?
I've always used Vaseline (okay, the generic) but surely there's a better way. Got any suggestions?
Try a clear semi-gloss or glossy polyurethane. Apply as directed, using two or three coats. It's best to use the aerosol can of polyurethane. The only problem with this is if you're using a candle as the light source, it could catch fire, unless you have a contained candle, or use an artifical light source, like the Pumpkinlights (see link below), which run on batteries.
The best, and possibly easiest solution, however, might be to not carve your pumpkin until one or two days before Halloween. This way it will be fresh for Halloween night, and you can dispose of it the next day without it smelling too much like rotten garbage.
