Assorted Collection
Where can I get assorted antique coins appraised?
I inherited a coin collection with all sorts of stuff, about three big Tupperware containers of loose, unsorted coins. Where do I go to get something like this appraised? I'm worried that if I bring in the whole lot to a regular appraisal shop, they might find something valuable in there and steal it (who knows, right?). I know that there are some things of significant value in there.
I'm an auctioneer and appraiser with 25 years of experience.
First know the difference between an appraisal and an offer to buy, there is a huge difference. Someone who is making an offer should never be hired to do an appraisal.
Here are some rules of thumb, but they are on general rules. I have some good sites in the resource box that will provide more detailed info:
Pick out US coins first, they are usually the best sellers.
Find the silver coins, dollars are best, halves next, quarters, dimes and nickels.
Sort by better condition.
Learn the common nicknames and keywords which your coins are referred to as IE Peace Dollar, Morgan Dollar etc.
Once you've determined what are your best coins, now you can focus on getting some knowledge on some of these.
