Can an employer ask you to put away a medicine bag worn in observance of the native american culture?
I Just married a Native American and she gave me a medicine bag to wear around my neck. I am honored by her gift and respect the culture that my wife so loves. I had been asked to put the bag out of site while I am my workplace. Our employee handbook does not touch on this subject and I do not know if this can be legally imposed.
An employer could impose this rule if:
There was a safety reason for banning jewelry, necklaces etc (for instance around moving equipment), and/or they have a clear policy of banning ALL religious paraphenalia. So no crosses, not Star of David on a chain, no nothing. Even then they'd need to show a valid reason for that restriction.
