Flint Ridge Flint
wedding invite wording help?
I decided to make my invites homemade and I need help with the wording.
this is the info:
Bride: katherine deatherage
groom: tyler cook
date: august 14th ____ at 12 pm
place: The Roundhouse in Flint Ridge Ok
I want to get the working just right and what kind of paper should i print these on?
Tyler Cook? Is that Maggie's boy, the one that's about my Robert's age? Or is that the Tyler we always called Jimmy, Mary's boy from her first marriage? You want your invitations to make these matters of identification very certain, not only for those who will actually be asked to attend, but for people looking at Gramma's Scrap Book in 2067. Be sure to include the names of Katherine's and Tyler's parents so that there is no ambiguity about who exactly Katherine and Tyler are.
If asking people to be present at a religious ceremony, say
The honor of the presence of
[write in each name, no &guest or &family baloney]
is desired at the marriage of ...
You don't INVITE people to a religious service because God is The Host, not you. Only God (or members of the clergy who speak for God) has the authority to invite people to His House.
If asking them to a non religious event, say
The pleasure of the company of
[write in each name, no &guest or &family baloney]
is requested at a small dance
to celebrate the marriage of ...
"Small dance" is an old fashioned way to say that your party is very very special. It's OK to say "dinner and dance" or "Champagne reception" or "pancake supper" or whatever describes your party.
Miss Manners tells us to invite And Guest if and only if you know someone named And Guest. If you don't know a name, find out. By being very exact about who IS invited, you are also plainly saying who is NOT invited. This is very very important where free champagne suppers are involved.
... marriage of
Katherine Deatherage, daughter of
Lillian Deatherage and David Newman
Thomas Green, to
Tyler Cook, son of
Elverinella Alexianette McCoullough-Hammerstein and
Adam Hammerstein, ...
I made the example complex to cover several possible situations. Kate's parents, Lillian and Thomas, divorced soon after Kate was born. Lillian then married David, who has been a "bonus father" and whose parents have been "bonus grandparents" to Kate. Because David's family is Kate's family, David is named as a parent. If Lillian had met David when Kate was already a big girl, and he had never been a "Daddy" to her, then he would not be listed.
Because Lillian and David are together as a couple, an "and" connects their names. Lillian and Thomas are not together so no "and" connects the two names. Because Lillian and David are together as a couple, their names MAY appear together on the same line. Elvie and Adam are also together as a couple, but both names won't fit on one line. Their names appear on separate lines, but an "and" connects them.
