Obs Point

What is the point of kick counts during the third trimester of pregnancy?

Since I've had all my pre-natal for two pregnancies with a midwife, I've never had to do kick counts. My midwife justs asks about activity - trusting that I would say something if I felt something was wrong. Then I go online and read about something called kick counts where OBs standardly ask their patients to count daily activity of the fetus. I really don't understand the point of them...by the time you determine that a fetus is not moving, wouldn't it be too late?!

You mentioned "horrible info on midwives" Site your source! And I don't mean the latest scare tactic on the news. Can you actually be serious!! The midwifery model results in less complications. The most progressive countries in the world - Switzerland for one! - use it and have a 4% c-section rate while the US is at over 25% If you'd done your research you would have wondered with all the interventions and complications produced by OBs, it's a wonder that women are still using them!!!

Well it is for basic knowledge of how often your baby moves/kicks and when that pattern changes which may mean something is wrong. It is just a pattern basically that obs like for their patients to determine since every baby and pregnancy is different. Usually if a woman notices the moving/kicking is not "regular" meaning the "pattern" it is quick within the day so she could call or go to her doctor for a check to make sure things are okay.
