Pow Regalia
Would they let me dance in a pow wow even though I'm not Native?
Hey guys this is just out of curiosity.
I'm chinese and I know that pow wows is a gathering but if I was to have regalia stuff would need permission or something?
I have a native american avatar cause I like Native American stuff I'm not because I want to be a wannabe Native.
Depends on the type of powwow...
...sometimes you have to be invited to dance, sometimes it's a free for all.
Regalia for non-enrolled or non-Natives usually includes a western dress shirt, western boots, some kind of hat (though not needed) and nice pants - no holes, denim is allowed but not really appropriate - if at all, wear dark denim, nice twill or khaki pants.
If you mean to dress in NDN regalia, don't bother. It will most likely be considered a mockery of our beliefs. If you are married into a tribe, but not NDN, you must get permission from your wife's family to wear ANY traditional dance attire. More than likely, they will say no.
-My husband went to a recent powwow adorned in Lederhosen et al (he's German) and was invited to share a traditional Bavarian dance as well as dance with our men. It was truly, truly the funniest thing I ever saw, yet respectful of our blended cultures.
